What first inspired your journey into philanthropy and humanitarian work?
My parents and teachers were great role models. We were taught at an early age to care for those who had less than we do. I am most grateful that they taught us good values and the need to care for underserved populations.
Was there a defining moment in your life that shaped your commitment to helping others?
For sure my upbringing, my work as a physical therapist at an Inner City Hospital in New York City where people struggled with both health issues and finances -- and then my travel to countries like Cambodia, China, Colombia, Nicaragua and many more countries where I saw great hardship.
Could you share a project or initiative you're particularly proud of and why it stands out?
I think writing my book , "Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give"was one project that was instrumental in motivating others to get involved in philanthropic purposes. Writing a book is a great deal of work - it took months and months . But it was worth every minute!
What values do you believe every humanitarian should carry in their work?
Honesty, integrity, hard work, and belief in the work they do. A humanitarian should have a genuine concern for the well being of others, animals and the environment. Then they must act to facilitate change to help those in need.
What challenges have you encountered in your philanthropic journey, and how did you overcome them?
I think one of the major challenges when serving on boards of charities and chairing charity galas is volunteer fundraising . A charity can not do the work they are set out to do if they do not have enough funds. Volunteer fundraising is hard work and is a very serious business. Funds should always be sent directly to a charity and the funds must be used wisely by the charity. My MBA in finance from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University and my work in the field of investment banking has been invaluable for my philanthropic work. Also my many years of serving on different charity boards has been extremely helpful. Volunteer fundraising requires official paperwork and a knowledge of the charity just to name a few aspects of what it entails. In my book "Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give", I have an entire chapter dedicated to volunteer fundraising.
What is one fashion piece you think everyone should have in their wardrobe?
This is a difficult question. I think a beautiful black pocketbook that can be used both during the day and night is my answer.
Are there specific designers or brands you feel deeply connected to? Why?
Yes, for years I have worn the styles of Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera and Dolce & Gabbana. For accessories, I love Chanel, Hermes and Valentino. I also love the work of lesser known designers such as Malan Breton, Victor dE Souza, Zang Toi, and Ese Azenabor, to name a few.
How Important Is It to teach younger generations to get Involved in philanthropy?
It is vitally important to encourage young people to become involved in the giving process. If they do not have the funds to give, they can start by giving time and knowledge, two very valuable resources. Charity events should have junior priced tickets whenever possible so that they can attend the charity parties. We must all try to serve as role models for younger generations by what we say and do!
Jean, you have served as a board member, chair and supporter of the French Heritage Society since 2012. Can you tell us more about your involvement with the French Heritage Society and why you became involved?
Yes, my family and I love France and its people! We have spent many vacations in Paris and other cities in France because we love French culture and the country of France. I started to support the French Heritage Society back in 2008. I was asked to serve on the board of the French Heritage Society in 2012. I truly love my involvement with it. In addition, I have served as a gala co-chair of its many New York and Palm beach galas for many years. In 2022, I was honored by the French Heritage Society at their annual gala in NYC. That was a very special evening for me! The French Heritage Society is open to all lovers of France and has different chapter locations in the United States and then a chapter in Paris. The French Heritage Society aims to ensure that the treasures of French architectural and cultural heritage survive to delight, educate and inspire future generations. French Heritage support many architectural projects in France and have done so for over 40 years. We were proud to have donated $2,000,000 to Notre Dame for its restoration. This is just one of the many projects we have supported. French Heritage are delighted to support numerous French architectural projects both in France and the United States.
What about French fashion and food?
I absolutely love French fashion and love all of its great designers. Over the years I have purchased many pieces from Hermes, Chanel, Valentino, Dior, Balmain and many more wonderful French designers. Many are pieces that I will use over and over again. France has many of the best restaurants in the world. I love French food and think French cuisine is perhaps the finest in the world.
